Research Interests
Machine Intelligence and Knowledge Based Systems:
A unified framework of knowledge representation in the form of generalized attributed hypergraphs and random graphs for: a) deterministic and/or statistically significant patterns discovered in n-tuples of mixed-mode data (or databases) and b) stationary and dynamic structural patterns of abstract types as well as of 3-D objects and scenes (using predicate, topological, and geometric relations of and among objects and components).
Pattern discovery and analysis on data of various types: a) n-tuples of mixed-mode data, b) structural and relational data, c) time-dependent data and d) attributed hypergraphs and random graphs for structural/relational patterns.
Geometrical realization in pseudo euclidean space of patterns with a distance measure defined in a finite symmetric space.
Discovery of functional forms from numerical data.
Image Analysis, Computer Vision and Modeling:
2-D image analysis: a) texture analysis, b) image segmentation of homogeneous and textured subregions and c) shape synthesis and recognition.
3-D computer vision: a) object model synthesis and incremental model building, b) object recognition, pose determination and tracking, c) scene integration and interpretation and d) model building and representation of free form, colour and textured surfaces.
Applications Projects:
Pattern discovery and analysis: a) diagnosis and prognosis in clinical and manufacture settings, b) process/data monitoring, classification and prediction (on manufacturing, economic and ecological data), c)bio-molecular sequence pattern synthesis and analysis and d) unconstrained hand-written character recognition.
Computer vision and model construction: a) terrain classification and segmentation, b) human face recognition and retrieval, c) 3-D model building for man-made objects as well as natural terrains and d) 3-D vision for robotics and manufacturing.
Sensor and Knowledge Based Robotics:
This is a Center of Excellence (MRCO) funded research project which aims at developing sensor and knowledge based intelligent systems to support automation and flexible manufacturing. The tasks include: a) on-line task planning, b) visual recognition of task environment, c) visual inspection of manufacturing parts, d) on-line coordination of robots for assembly and simple manufacturing tasks, e) on-line control of a robot workstation, f) mobile robot navigation and control and g) space autonomous robotics.
Direct technology transfer to industry through research contracts:

d) Northern Telecom, e) SPAR Aerospace, f) Thomson CSF and g) Virtek Vision.
